They are able to control their powers through a variant of Chinese martial arts called bending. Civilization is divided into four nations all named after and inhabited by people who have the same elemental powers. The Water Tribes, Earth Kingdom, Fire Nation and the Air Nomads. Only one exceptional being can wield all four elements. He or she becomes the arbiter of peace among the four nations.
